AleatoryTV is an autonomous agent that constantly scans a channel of live broadcast television for specific words via speech recognition algorithms. Collectively, the individually searched words form a sentence, preselected by the artist. As the agent “hears” the words on live TV, it samples the audio and visual content that accompanies the found word at the moment the agent thinks the word has been spoken. The clip is then placed in a loop that is continuously played back on a large monitor.
AleatoryTV is a demonstration of the futility in algorithmically monitoring transmissions by searching for keywords. At its core, the work distills a broadcast television channel, allowing the viewer to watch without becoming seduced by narrative. It is at this uniquely deconstructed juncture that one is not only allowed the space, but the provocation to make unbiased associations regarding the state of our current broadcast infosphere.
