Pixave:Denominator
1998
Single Channel Video
Audio: Bart Woodstrup
Video: Matthew Biederman
DISCLAIMER - the video relies heavily on interlaced video. This doesn't hold up well under compression. I did my best. Ask me for a Hi-Res version and I'll gladly share it.
Pixave:Denominator was an experiment by myself and my longtime friend and collaborator Bart Woodstrup. I was living in San Francisco at the time and he in DeKalb, IL. We decided that we wanted to make a project that looked reflected the scientific methodology of breaking things up into smaller and smaller pieces or parts. video=pixel, sound =wave, so there it is, Pixave.
The video and audio were produced independently of one another - we only decided on a theme and length - then we just put the two together, no editing before or after, it just worked.
It was made back in the day of the video toaster on the amiga with two 3/4" tape decks. Produced at BAVC (Bay Area Video Coalition) The audio was made with a crazy Max patch (pre-MSP) driving some synths at NIU (Northern Illinois University)
The video was screened all over the world, CUFF, Paris/Berlin Recontres International, and a number of other festivals that I can't recall anymore.
We also made it into an installation that won First Place at the Break21 festival in Lujbljana, Slovenia
